Tofino Surf Rescue Experience

Every June, candidates embark on an unforgettable adventure.

Industry-leading instructors teach participants how to adapt lifeguarding skills and techniques to the challenging outdoor environment, all while enjoying breathtaking views.

Candidates enhance both their lifeguarding and leadership skills in one of the world’s most stunning locations. They are pushed to demonstrate endurance and competency in the management requirements of the National Lifeguard Waterfront and Surf options. Team scenarios incorporate additional tools such as rescue crafts and surfboards.

Course registration is exclusive to VILA members in good standing.

Course costs may vary each year as the association actively seeks grant funding to help subsidize participant fees.

Camping Facilities: Surf Junction

Conveniently located between Ucluelet and Tofino, Surf Junction provides easy vehicle access to all nearby beaches—each within a 20-minute drive. Basic camping amenities are available at the campground office, and the Co-op is just 20 minutes away for any additional supplies.

The facilities include multiple group campsites, flush toilets, hot showers, wet suit drying rooms, an outdoor hot tub, a sauna, a coffee shop, and a gift shop.

To ensure the best experience, beach locations are selected the night before based on weather conditions, tides, and the specific environment needed for planned activities. You can expect to visit at least three of the following locations—though likely more:

North Chesterman Beach
South Chesterman Beach
Cox Bay
Rosie’s Bay
Wickaninnish Beach
Florencia Bay
Long Beach
